Home Electric Vehicle Charger Installation

Costs, Process, and How to Pick an Installer in Chicago

Energy Efficiency for Commercial

If you've recently bought an electric vehicle — or you're about to — one of the first home improvement projects on your list is probably a Level 2 charger.

Plugging into a regular wall outlet works, but it's painfully slow: 3 to 5 miles of range per hour of charging.

A Level 2 home charger gives you 25 to 40 miles per hour, which means most overnight charges fill your battery completely. For Chicago homeowners with a daily commute or weekend road trips, that's the difference between EV ownership feeling effortless and feeling like a chore.

But installing a Level 2 charger isn't just "plug in a fancy outlet." It's a real electrical project that requires a licensed contractor, a city permit, and — depending on your home — possibly a panel upgrade.

Here's what to plan for.

What a Level 2 EV charger installation actually involves

A typical Level 2 home charger install includes a 240-volt dedicated circuit run from your electrical panel to your garage or driveway, a NEMA 14-50 outlet (for plug-in chargers) or a hardwired connection (for wall-mounted units like the Tesla Wall Connector, ChargePoint Home Flex, JuiceBox, or Wallbox), the charger unit itself, a City of Chicago electrical permit, and a final inspection.

For most homes, this is a half-day to one-day job. The complication arises when your existing electrical panel doesn't have capacity for the new 50-amp circuit — which is common in older Chicago bungalows, greystones, and two-flats built before the 1990s. In those cases you'll need a panel upgrade, which adds cost and time but is something you'd likely need anyway if you're investing in your home long-term.

Cost breakdown for Chicago homeowners

A realistic budget for a Level 2 EV charger installation in Chicago typically falls in these ranges:

  • Charger unit (consumer cost):** $400 to $1,200 depending on brand and features
  • Installation without panel upgrade:** $800 to $1,800
  • Installation with panel upgrade:** $2,500 to $5,500
  • Chicago electrical permit:** $50 to $200

So total cost for a typical install on a panel with available capacity lands around $1,200 to $3,000. With a panel upgrade, expect $3,000 to $7,000.

Don't forget incentives. The federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit offsets 30% of installation costs (capped at $1,000 for residential), and ComEd periodically offers rebates tied to EV-specific electrical upgrades. A good installer will help you understand which credits apply before you sign.

How to pick an EV charger installer

Anyone with a truck can post an ad calling themselves an "EV installer." Three things actually matter when you're vetting candidates:

  • Licensed electrical contractor. Chicago licensure for electrical work is non-negotiable. An unlicensed install can void your home insurance and creates problems at resale.
  • Real insurance. General liability plus workers' comp. Ask for a certificate before they start.
  • Multi-brand experience. Not every contractor has worked with every charger brand. If you've already picked a Tesla Wall Connector, JuiceBox, or ChargePoint Home Flex, make sure your installer has done that model before.

Bonus points if your contractor has experience integrating EV chargers with solar, battery storage, or a smart electrical panel. Cross-trade experience matters because the most expensive part of EV ownership over 10 years isn't the car — it's the electricity. A future-proofed electrical system means lower lifetime operating cost and easier upgrades down the road.

Pairing EV with solar (worth a conversation!)

About half of our EV charger clients eventually add rooftop solar. The economics make sense: a typical Chicago home charging one EV uses 2,500 to 4,000 kWh per year, which can substantially shift your utility bill. Pairing a 6-10 kW solar array with an EV charger means you're effectively driving on sunshine.

If solar is in your 5-year plan, the install we do today should leave room for it. That means running the right conduit, sizing the panel for future PV, and not painting yourself into an electrical corner.

Why Green Power Works for your EV charger

We've been Chicago's licensed green contractor since 2008. We install Level 2 chargers from every major brand — Tesla, ChargePoint, JuiceBox, Wallbox, Enphase — and handle the full project end-to-end: permits, panel upgrades if needed, installation, inspection, and walk-through.

Because we also do residential solar, geothermal, and home electrical work, we can spot opportunities to integrate your EV charger with future clean energy upgrades. Most standalone installs are completed in one visit. We pull the permit, do the work, schedule the inspection, and leave you with a charger that just works.
